West Island of Montreal Chamber of Commerce organizes Mayors Forum
Pointe-Claire, March 10, 2023– On March 2nd, 2023, members of the West Island of Montreal Chamber of Commerce (the “WIMCC”) Executive Committee and the West Island of Montreal mayors met at the offices of Aéroport de Montréal (“ADM”) to hold their quarterly forum to discuss the future development of the territory pertaining to the West Island business community, where the broad issues of densification, mobility and affordable housing were discussed.
WIMCC Advocacy Role
The forum was the result of individual meetings between the WIMCC and each of the West Island mayors on issues specific to their municipalities.
In part, the forum served as a brainstorming exercise where the WIMCC obtained consensus from the mayors regarding common issues affecting the West Island business community, namely, infrastructure, public transportation, labour shortage and healthcare, just to name a few.
It was agreed that these were the main components of a responsible development plan that will lead to a successful, sustainable, and vibrant West Island community for the future. The WIMCC’s role will be to advocate and take positions on files to help the group achieve this ultimate goal. Mr. Joseph Huza, President & Executive Director at the WIMCC indicated that “the WIMCC will continue to do its part in bringing these projects to fruition by leveraging the tools at its disposal”.
The WIMCC invited M. Martin Massé, Vice-President, Public Relations and Sustainable Development at ADM to share the specific development issues faced by Montreal-Trudeau International Airport, namely the disputed extension of the REM line from the airport to the Dorval VIA Rail station. Also invited to the forum was PME MTL, Ouest-de-l’Île to share their expertise during the discussions regarding the future development of the West Island.
Mr. Nishant Sharma, President of the WIMCC noted that “the quarterly meetings between the WIMCC and the mayors has created a working Executive Committee to address these important issues affecting the West Island business community”.
