COVID-19 UPDATES | March 24, 2020

On March 18, 2020, the Federal government announced its Economic Response Plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of $27 Billion has been allocated to Canadian businesses and their workers to provide help.

Here are some highlights:

EMPLOYERS 

  • To help businesses keep their employees, the Trudeau government is implementing a subsidy offering up to $1,375 per employee and $25,000 per employer;
  • The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will allow businesses to defer payment of income tax until August 31, 2020;
  • The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and Export Development Canada (EDC) will manage the Business Credit Program where more than $10 Billion in additional support will go largely to small and medium-sized businesses.

 

WORKERS

  • The CRA will allow workers to postpone the deadline for the remittal of their tax returns to June 1, 2020;
  • Implementation of the Emergency Care Allowance which represents up to $900 every two weeks for a total period of 15 weeks;
  • Introduction of an emergency support allowance of up to $5 Billion for workers who are not eligible for employment insurance and who are unemployed;
  • Enhancement of the Canada Child Benefit;
  • GST credit for taxpayers.
