West Island Leaders Collaborate on Mobility, Infrastructure, and Sustainable Growth

March 13, 2025

Location: PME MTL OUEST offices, 1675 Autoroute Transcanadienne, Bureau 301, Dorval

The West Island Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with PME MTL Ouest-de-l’Île recently organised a morning session discussion between all key municipal leaders to address pressing challenges and opportunities related to mobility, infrastructure, economic development, and long-term sustainability in the West Island.

The discussions underscored the importance of collaboration in developing forward-thinking solutions that align with the evolving needs of the community. Participants emphasized the region’s unique economic diversity, strong community spirit, and shared commitment to sustainable growth. The strategic vision for the West Island focuses on key areas such as housing, environmental resilience, transportation, and the incorporation of innovative urban planning strategies.

A major focus of the meeting was the need to improve mobility and reduce congestion along major transportation corridors in the West Island. The implementation of smart traffic management systems, improved transit connectivity, and the upcoming arrival of the REM were recognized as crucial elements in shaping the future of transportation. Participants highlighted that evolving work habits and technological advancements present fresh opportunities to reevaluate mobility strategies, all while ensuring accessibility, safety, security, and efficiency for all residents.

Beyond transportation, the forum also covered broader infrastructure issues, such as Hydro Quebec’s plan to expand underground power lines and necessary upgrades to local road networks. These initiatives are crucial for meeting the region’s growing demands while improving connectivity and resilience.

The political landscape and its influence on infrastructure development were also a significant topic of discussion. Participants stressed the importance of open dialogue and cooperation between all levels of government, emphasizing the role of the Chamber of Commerce in fostering partnerships that drive meaningful progress and open communication between all parties involved. As part of this effort, participants cited examples from other cities, such as the city of Toronto, as reference points for urban planning and sustainable development.

Throughout the meeting, municipal leaders highlighted their responsibility in balancing daily operations with long-term strategic planning. The forum served as a platform for exchanging ideas and identifying concrete actions that will shape the future of the West Island. There was a strong emphasis on ensuring transparency, engaging residents, and designing solutions that reflect community needs while maintaining economic viability.

The discussions ended with a mutual commitment to proactive decision-making and collaborative leadership. Moving forward, participants reiterated their commitment to working together to create a well-connected, accessible, and prosperous West Island that maintains a high quality of life for all its residents. The West Island Chamber of Commerce will continue its efforts to engage directly with higher authorities, ensuring that our collective concerns are acknowledged and effectively addressed. By doing so, we will guarantee that our voices are not only recognized but also drive meaningful change for the future of the West Island.
