Your Customers Are No Longer “Googling” — They’re Asking AI. Preparing your Business for AI Search

For over 25 years, WSI Digital Marketing has been a proud member of the West Island of Montreal Chamber of Commerce, helping local businesses grow online. In that time, we’ve seen plenty of shifts in digital marketing, but nothing as significant as what’s happening right now.

The way people search for products, services, and local businesses is changing fundamentally. For two decades, “search” meant typing a query into Google and scanning a list of blue links. Today, more and more people are asking questions directly to AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Claude, and Perplexity — and getting a single, synthesized answer instead of a page of results to click through.

This shift matters enormously for local businesses. If an AI answer engine doesn’t mention your business when a potential customer asks “who’s the best accountant in the West Island?” or “where can I get reliable IT support near me?”  you simply don’t exist in that moment of decision.

SEO Isn’t Dead. It’s Evolving

We want to be clear about something: traditional SEO is not dead, and the work you’ve invested in it isn’t wasted. In fact, the opposite is true. The content, structure, and authority you’ve built through years of SEO are the raw material that AI engines pull from to generate their answers. Well-optimized web pages, strong backlinks, clear business listings, and authoritative content are exactly what these AI systems look for when deciding which businesses to cite.

Think of it this way: SEO got your business findable. AI SEO, sometimes called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) gets your business quoted. Your past SEO investment is the foundation; AI SEO is the next floor built on top of it.

That said, the process has become more complex and more technical. Ranking #1 on Google used to be the primary goal. Being cited as a source on the LLMs is how people are finding your products and services and there are more technical components required for your Website to be understood, trusted and referenced confidently by the LLMs.

5 Key Elements That Drive AI Visibility

If you want your business to show up in AI-generated answers, here are the five elements that will help you improve your online credibility and authority:

Structured, Machine-Readable Content
AI engines favor content that’s clearly organized — headings, FAQs, bullet points, and schema markup (structured data) that explicitly tells search engines and AI crawlers what your business does, where you’re located, and who you serve.

Authoritative, Citation-Worthy Content
AI tools tend to cite sources that are specific, factual, and well-sourced themselves. Generic marketing copy gets overlooked; detailed guides, original data, case studies, and expert commentary get cited.

Consistent Business Information Across the Web & Solid Trust Signals.
Your business name, address, phone number, and service descriptions need to match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, directories, and the Chamber of Commerce listing. AI engines cross-reference multiple sources — inconsistency creates doubt, and doubt means you don’t get mentioned. A business with a good deal of review and more positive reviews will outperform a competitor that is not focussed on obtaining reviews from various sources.

Strong Topical Authority
Rather than chasing keywords, AI engines reward businesses that comprehensively cover their area of expertise. A manufacturing firm with content assets such as Case Studies, E-books, industry accreditations and blog content will out-cite a competitor with five thin pages.

Technical Accessibility for AI Crawlers
AI systems need to be able to access, crawl, and parse your site. This includes proper indexing permissions, fast load times, mobile responsiveness, and clean code, technical groundwork that’s becoming as important as the content itself.

What This Means for West Island Businesses

The businesses that adapt now, building on their existing SEO foundation while layering in AI-specific optimization will be the ones showing up when local customers ask AI assistants for recommendations. The businesses that wait will become increasingly invisible, even if they still rank reasonably well on a traditional Google search.

This is a technical shift, and it does require expertise. The strategies that worked for ranking on page one of Google in 2015 or even 2023 are no longer sufficient on their own.

As a longstanding member of the West Island of Montreal Chamber of Commerce, WSI Digital Marketing is committed to helping local businesses navigate this transition. We offer dedicated services in both areas:
